So, what you are actually asking is for students to have opportunities to learn how to make good choices during their compulsory schooling. And the sad reality is that very few educational systems support decision making, as they are built on cohort mentality and according to factory model. So, learning to choose has to be embedded into the existing curricula without making it yet another subject to be taught (but not necessary learned, because teaching and learning are two very different processes). I viewed the same problem you do, and so my book Choosing how to Teach & Teaching How to Choose is about this extremely important topic and available at Amazon & Waterstones. The challenges seem to be universal and not just in the UK or US. Sadly, priorities seem to mixed up and solutions focus on "quick fixes" rather than an on-going "practice makes perfect" approach. I wonder if there are specific tools we need to teach our youth or if by simply helping to foster a more positive and solid foundation between parent and their children the skills could be learned naturally. Perhaps the stronger the family connection the more likely a child will learn on their own, knowing their family is there to support them.Kevin Strausshttp://www.familyejournal.comnoreply@blogger.com
